Dinner and Theatre Experiences in Cape Town

Cape Town is definitely not a city lacking in opportunities for cultural experiences and whether it’s a classic Shakespearean production you’re looking for or maybe a fun-filled night of your favourite live music is more your style, there’s something for everyone here in the Mother City. There’s nothing better than escaping the real-world for a few hours and enjoying the wonderful experience that is performing arts. A few Cape Town spots have taken this experience a step further and offer a dining experience while you enjoy the show. I for one can’t think of anything better than my two favourite things all in one, good food and theatre. Here is just a short list of the many spots in Cape Town where you can do just this.

Stardust

Stardust is definitely a firm Cape Town favourite where dancing on tables is the norm and you might be served by your waiter one moment and serenaded by their smooth vocals the next. Situated in Woodstock this one of a kind restaurant allows you to experience the best in Mediterranean and North African inspired dishes along with some of the best vocalists in Cape Town. A favourite for birthdays and all celebrations, be sure to book in advance and be prepared to enjoy covers of all your favourite artists, old and new and remember to have on your dancing shoes because by the end of night even the most reluctant of guests will be up on their feet.  The bar opens from 5pm and seating at 7pm after which the show starts at 8pm till late. The Barnyard Theatre

Since its humble beginnings back in 1996 on a small dairy farm in Plettenberg Bay, The Barnyard Theatre Production Company has grown immensely and spread its wings all over South Africa. Here in Cape Town we have our very own Barnyard Theatre at the Willowbridge Centre in Tyger Valley and their programme is full of a variety of shows. Their speciality is musical performances featuring many different genres of the ‘greatest hits’ but don’t miss out on their comedy and other performances too. The interior has a true barnyard feel with wooden tables and a spacious seating area including an upper level that caters for any size party. Bring along a picnic or order a pizza before the show and have it brought to your table. All drinks can be bought at their fully stocked bar so be sure to grab something before the show and get ready to sing along.

The Kalk Bay Theatre

One of my favourite spots has to be the little seaside town that is Kalk Bay. Little but so full of character and nooks and corners with unique shops and restaurants. A day out in Kalk Bay is not complete without a visit to its theatre in the evening. This intimate 79 seater restaurant and theatre built inside an Old Dutch reformed church is a stunning venue with new shows frequently. Cape Town Comedy Club

If a night of laughter is what you’re looking for then you can’t miss the Cape Town Comedy Club at The V&A Waterfront. Gracing its stage are some of the best comedians both locally and internationally. Situated in the old pump house the atmosphere is very relaxed where you can enjoy some good food while being thoroughly entertained (just be careful not to laugh too hard now-that could get messy). The club is open 5 days a week and there are always new acts to see so be sure to check their line-up and get those tickets booked. It is sure to be a funny-filled night for all.
