Photo credit: hiketablemountain.co.za The most obvious one is going for a hike. Although you can still do this during the height of summer, it’s safer to go before the UV rays are back at maximum heat. You may still need to apply sunscreen, as a precaution, and pack water and a hat, but you’re far less likely to burn or lose a lot energy if it’s cooler out. Some hikes to enjoy include: the Pipe Track (from there, you can make your way up to the Tranquillity Cracks), Table Mountain, Skeleton Gorge and of course, Lion’s Head. Even though Lion’s Head is a relatively short hike by all accounts, during summer, this hike can take more out of you. So, instead enjoy a brisker hike during late winter or spring, without worrying too much about snakes, sun burn and sweltering temps.
Although it’s not the most strenuous of activities, spending time on the beach is something most of us love doing so it’s a popular outdoor activity the world over. When you’re at the beach having a blast, it’s easy to lose track of time or forget to reapply sun screen every few hours – so it makes sense to head there before it’s too hot out. And because summer is peak tourist (and visitor) season, the beaches are likely to fill up much faster, especially on weekends. Meaning, if you visit during the off season, you can spend a longer, quieter time on the beaches. In fact, at certain times of day, you might even find them largely deserted… Some great beaches to visit include: Camps Bay, Oudekraal (paid entry but you can braai up a storm here), Blouberg, Melkbosstrand, Kommetjie’s Long Beach, Boulders Beach (also paid entry) and Clifton’s amazing beaches. Head for a beautiful horse ride along Noordhoek beach with Imhoff Equestrian Centre. They offer two-hour outrides through the wetlands and then onto the pristine beach. As you ride, you’ll see a variety of wildlife and birdlife. Both beginners to pros are welcome. However, you need to be at least 12 years of age and weigh less than 100kg. The horses are well-trained and make for pleasant, safe rides – but there’s no question that it may be easier to partake in this activity before summer fully arrives… If only because horse riding can be a pretty tiring exercise for horse and rider, even when you take things slow. Afterwards, head back to Imhoff Farm where you can browse delightful shops, visit the snake park or farm yard and enjoy tucking into great food at your choice of several restaurants and cafes found within. For more information, contact Imhoff Equestrian Centre on: (082) 774 1191
Whether you hire a bike and ride along the Sea Point Promenade, or take your own and cycle from Hout Bay and along Chapman’s Peak Drive, you’re in for a real treat! If you’re trying to get summer fit, cycling is one of the best ways to do it. Take things at your own pace and enjoy the scenic sights along the way, without worrying about the sun beating down upon you or having to avoid areas ripe with traffic congestion.
