Best Markets to Enjoy This Summer

There are markets to enjoy year-round in the Mother City but what better time than when the weather is fine?

While the summer sun still shines, here are the best markets to enjoy this summer :

1) Oranjezicht City Farm Market

Held every Saturday near the V&A Waterfront, Oranjezicht City Farm Market is a proper farmers’ market, which offers fresh, locally grown fruit, vegetables and herbs, as well as baked or homemade goods, like breads, cheeses, nuts, spices, ethically sourced meats and biltong. It’s a wonderful pet- (please keep your pooches leashed) and family friendly place in the heart of the CBD precinct for locals and foreigners alike to buy healthy foods and treats alike.

This free entry market, where you can shop and weigh your healthy purchases, is also nicely complemented by the artisanal traders, who sell breakfast and lunch.

Food is available for sit-down or takeaway, with coffees, juices, smoothies and a variety of foods, which cater towards special diets. Here, you’ll find gluten-free and sugar-free goodies to name a few on offer.

For more information, please visit http://www.ozcf.co.za.

Date and time: Every Saturday, from 09:00 – 14:00.

Venue: Granger Bay, near the V&A Waterfront and The Lookout.

Shop for fresh produce, charcuterie, olives, cheeses and fresh breads from the small producers’ section or peruse the craft, jewellery, lifestyle and fashion stalls.

This relatively new market, which started last September, is unique in its close proximity to the N2 and for the fact of its being either your first or last stop along the Stellenbosh Wine Route, depending on which side you’re travelling from.

The morning kicks off with a family breakfast run or walk, before a light bite to eat. At 10:00, guests can enjoy the famous Vergenoegd Duck Parade, which is when some of the estate’s 1000-strong Runner ducks strut their stuff. (There will be extra parades at 12:30 and again at 15:30.)

After that, enjoy browsing for tasty food, lovely goodies and perhaps even enjoy some live music. The market is also pet-friendly but please keep pets leashed at all times.

For more information, please visit: http://www.vergenoegd.co.za/market.

Date and time: Every Saturday, from 09:00 – 15:00.

Venue: Vergenoegd Wine Esate, Baden Powell Drive, Stellenbosch.

Other fabulous markets to enjoy this summer include the Hout Bay Lions Craft Market, Melkbosch Strand Unique Seaview Market and the Social Market at The Claremont… so go on and enjoy some lovely shopping and good, clean family fun at these summer-friendly markets.
